Fiction - Psychological Thriller
Three Words: Enthralling, Addictive, Suspenseful
Review: I. could. not. stop. reading. this. book. It had me hooked less than a chapter in. It surprised me over and over and over again. Just when I thought I had things figured out, another turn was taken, another connection made. The book is broken into three parts, from the viewpoint of the main female characters and each part is even more suspenseful and delicious than the last. I kept thinking, wait, I have been duped before, things cannot be the way I am assuming right now, and sure enough, events did a 180... or they didn’t. There is literally no predicting in this tale. I liked it way more than I expected to! I truly believe it to be an artfully woven tale about the intricacies of martial relationships, familial bonds, mental health and more. I thought the epilogue was clever, however, I do think that it was just a bit too far fetched to be believable. There are so many twists and turns already in this story, I felt that the added connection was not necessary and for me at least, slightly took away from the overall feel. But, it does make sense and is quite a nice exclamation point to the end the book.
Summary: *no spoilers* Vanessa, Nelly, Richard; their story will you suck you in immediately. A kind of love triangle, or is it? Again, nothing is really what you believe it to be. The story is set in present day New York City, and Nelly, the main character, is a sweet, young, preschool teacher and part time waitress who has a successful, handsome and rich fiancee. She has hit the jackpot; Richard is caring, responsible, adores her and has no issue taking care of her, and those around her. The only problem is, well, nothing. The only negative aspect of her marrying him is that she will not be able to spend her days with her preschool cubs and her evenings with her sassy and brutally honest best friend and roommate, Sam. Nelly is an anxious woman who needs reassurance and to feel safe. She grew up with a mentally ill mother and her father died when she was young. She feels incredibly lucky to have found Richard. He is her protector. However, Vanessa, a woman seemingly scorned and heart shattered, mentally unstable and an alcoholic to boot, emerges as being what stands in the way of Nelly and Richard’s happiness… Or is she standing there?
