Historical Fiction/Mystery
Three Words: Mysterious, Super-Natural, Engaging
Review: Compared to my last read, this book was not nearly as suspenseful or thrilling, but it was still entertaining and a nice escape. The book bounces back and forth between perspectives of three women- two from the past, one from the current time. It was easy to follow and the story flowed nicely. Although they are from different times, there is a theme and items that connect the main characters. From the very start, there are some supernatural elements at play, mainly the idea of ghosts and the hold that certain items may have on someone, but it was nothing that weirded me out or seemed completely implausible (except toward the very end). Some of the characters in the story have very relatable real-life issues such as alcoholism, family trouble, anxiety, domestic abuse, infidelity. In other words, everything is not painted in rosy hues, people have flaws and go through troubling experiences.
Summary: Set in England in both 1763 and current day, three women tell the story of a part of their lives that end up being turned quite upside down by a few devious and abusive men and a beautiful gold and silver gown. The gown becomes central to the entire book- coming from the past and appearing in the future. The women’s stories parallel one another and the struggles they face to deal with abuse, difficult circumstances, betrayals by family and struggling to be heard become one in the same.
