I hope you have at least one person in your life that:
Loves you. Yes. I know that sounds weird, but, believe it or not “love” has limits for some, and there should be at least one person out there that will love you hard, unconditionally and resolutely.
Is your people. The I-don’t-care-what-you-look-like, don’t-put-a-bra-on-for-me, we-can-just-be-quiet-if-you-want type of people.
Sees you. That really sees you. That person that will notice a slight eye movement or lip curl and understand. Then, they will do anything to help quell whatever you are faced with in that moment.
Is supportive. Someone that will root you on even when you may not deserve it, will celebrate a win no matter how small, and unapologetically wants the best for you, even if they do not have the same idea of “best.”
Defends you. Especially in the moments you do not realize you need defending. That person that just shuts it down when you cannot find it within yourself to do so.
Is honest. The “maybe try a different shirt,” “I don’t want to do that,” “you are overreacting,” or “I don’t get it” friend. They will bring you back to earth at precisely the right moment.
Laughs with you (and at you when appropriate). Humor and humility go hand in hand, friends.
Is appreciative. Your “thank you” person, your “you are worthy” cheerleader. Someone who will remind you that all you do matters.
Understands. Someone who gets it. Everything. All of it, always.
Is there. Not necessarily all the time, because that (especially these days) is hard. But someone who when they are with you, they are “there”, they are “present.” That person who sees you, and hears you and even if you haven’t actually seen or heard one another in a long while… you pick up like it was yesterday.
If you have a couple people who exhibit one or two things on my very scientific list, you are lucky! Perhaps you have ten separate people who are especially gifted at one of the above. But, if you have one person in your life that is all of these things at once, you have hit the jackpot - and you should do your absolute best to reciprocate.
